A Playroom for the Grandchildren

The Brief

An older couple whose children had moved out and started their own families wished to turn a bedroom into a playroom for their grandchildren. It required a complete refurbishment of the room, including new window treatments, carpet, furniture and lighting.

The Challenge

Incorporating a sense of fun was crucial – the space needed to encourage learning through play, as well as provide a comfortable place to read a book or to watch TV. We opted to use colour to provide energy and playfulness, creating zones within the room to accommodate a child’s physical or artistic endeavours.

The Solution

A bright, striped wall scheme provided the base for the project with layered lighting and playful touches adding a sense of fun. We created a bespoke lego wall and blackboard wall, both lit from behind, with small step stools to aid little legs. A ball pit with colourful slide encouraged movement with a padded floor mat to soften play. A craft table and reading area with custom floor cushions were included to ignite a child’s interest. Finally, a luxurious velvet sofa bed for sleepovers added flexibility, also providing an opportunity for quiet time and relaxation with the grandchildren.
